Interview With Author Ervin László

1. What motivated you to write your book, to force you from taking an idea or experience and turning it into this book?

Humanity, the whole living world on the planet, is in crisis. I have much experience with unusual crisis situations and conditions and feel morally obliged to provide advice on how to clarify them and help people cope with them. The crises we have been experiencing are driving us to change, and it is no longer a question of whether to change or not to change, only how to

change. The wrong way would have catastrophic consequences. We would encounter a series of deepening crises—the virus crisis and the climate crisis would only be forerunners. But the right way could open an era of a better life for humanity on the planet. We now have a golden opportunity to take our evolution into our own hands.

2. What is it about and who is it for?

It is about the current condition of the human world. We've agreed on a number of crucial goals and objectives, and partial financing to achieve them. We are moving in the right direction but are not moving far enough nor rapidly enough. To meet the challenges of global sustainability, bolder and more adequately financed measures are needed. Resolutions and projections on national and international levels are no longer sufficient. Action is needed on the global scale, and this presupposes the agreement and active participation of a critical mass of the world’s peoples. This book is for every conscious human being who is willing to do something about it.

3. What takeaways might the reader will be left with after reading it?

Crisis is not just danger; it is also opportunity. The opportunity for fundamental change does not appear in a functional system. For fundamental change, disruption is called for in the system: a critical fluctuation. Fluctuations occur at all times in the system, and when they reach a critical point, the system either shifts its evolutionary trajectory to a more stable branch or decomposes to its more stable components. The solution to the crisis does not lie in the hands of authority, but rather in the constitutes, intuitions, and deep knowledge of each and every human being.

4. How did you decide on your book’s title and cover design?

Through a series of tries - always improving the clarity and simplicity of the message the book is to convey. While I have no aversion to an intricate cover design, I often find that the best solutions are the simplest. In this case, the imagery of planet Earth coupled with the upward directional arrow more than conveyed the messaging I was looking for. As for the book’s title, THE UPSHIFT, like the transmission of an automobile, we too must take our efforts to better the world into a higher gear.

5. What advice or words of wisdom do you have for fellow writers?

Write what comes to you as important and worthy of being communicated. Not about things that are prescribed to you, or that you write in view of attaining an ulterior end -- for example, money or fame. Be sincere and bold.

6. What trends in the book world do you see -- and where do you think the book publishing industry is heading?

More and more people are “waking up” and looking for answers to their deep questions -- who are they, and why are they here.

And what can they do to make this into a better world. That means books that address these issues with as much background and commitment as the writer is capable to muster. Both science and spirituality are part of the writer’s qualification.

7. What challenges did you overcome to write this book?

I always need to clear the deck when writing my own books and articles --to make it the top priority. Sometimes that is challenging and calls for sacrifice in time, money, and attention to other things. Clearing myself of as many distractions as possible makes for a considerably more productive writing session, though that is not always feasible, so that can be a challenge at times.

8. How would you describe your writing style?

Clear and to the point, but at the same time polished, without chat-chat. A literary style applied to contents I feel needs to be shared. I feel my message is best conveyed when I’ve applied my base of knowledge in science and spiritual philosophy, in addition to some simple common sense.

9. If people can buy or read one book this week or month, why should it be yours?

My books, especially my latest book THE UPSHIFT, are vitally and perhaps uniquely important in offering insight into the condition of our world and the ways of interacting with it -- acting for the betterment of the human condition. Despite the difficulties that we face today, there are reasons to be optimistic and hopeful, and THE UPSHIFT is a blueprint for making the change that you want to see in the world.
