Interview With Author Scott LaPierre

  1. What motivated you to write your book, to force you from taking an idea or experience and turning it into this book? I wrote Your Marriage God's Way because I am passionate about this area of Scripture and life. God designed the family as the primary unit for every other segment in society, including the church. And marriage is the heart of the family. As a marriage disintegrates, the family disintegrates. As families disintegrate, churches disintegrate. As churches disintegrate, society disintegrates. When marriages are strong, however, families are strong. When families are strong, churches can be strong because strong churches are made up of strong families. As a pastor, I have seen many struggling marriages, but I have also seen couples find the solutions to their problems in Scripture. The truth of God's Word has the power to heal and strengthen any marriage.

  1. What is it about and who is it for? Your Marriage God’s Way is a conservative Christian marriage book that largely deals with God’s commands for husbands and wives. This means the chapters outlined the roles and responsibilities that God gives to men and women when married. I believe the Bible presents what’s known as a complementarian view of the genders. This means men and women complement each other or fit together like puzzle pieces with each having separate strengths and weaknesses. I outlined the separate roles and responsibilities for husbands and wives throughout the book. I would say the book and workbook are for anyone who wants to have a stronger, healthier, joy filled marriage by following God’s commands.

  1. What takeaways might the reader will be left with after reading it? I believe when couples read this book together it will strengthen their relationships with each other, and most importantly with Christ. Because the marriage relationship is a picture of Christ and His relationship to the church, it is one of the greatest evangelistic tools believers have. Godly marriages have the potential to reveal Christ to an unbelieving world; therefore, I also hope the book helps people become more evangelistic. As a husband I have experienced firsthand the blessings that come from obeying God's Word and the negative consequences that come with disobedience. I hope husbands and wives come to learn what God says about marriage and experience these blessings themselves.  I poured my heart into Your Marriage God's Way, and I pray it strengthens your marriage and relationship with Christ! If you would like to learn more about me, or I can pray for you in any way, please feel free to reach out to me.

  1. How did you decide on your book’s title and cover design? I decided on the title, because the book really is about doing marriage God’s way. The content is thoroughly biblical because it came from sermons I preached. Harvest House designed the cover. They sent me a sample, I made some suggestions that they applied, and then they finalized it. It was a simple, enjoyable process.

  1. What advice or words of wisdom do you have for fellow writers? Someone told me early on and I completely agree that writing is a craft. It is a skill that can be improved. I am a much better writer now than I was five years ago, because of all the writing I’ve done. If people want to be serious authors, they should be committing some amount of time every day to writing.

  1. What trends in the book world do you see -- and where do you think the book publishing industry is heading? More people are listening to audiobooks than ever before. Authors are doing themselves a disservice if they don’t provide an audiobook copy. They have already went to all the trouble of writing and editing the book. The hard part is done. They should take advantage of all that effort to produce an audiobook as well. I’m in a unique position because I have self-published and I’m currently working with Harvest House, a traditional publisher. I have familiarity with both worlds. I think more people are self-publishing which is good and bad. It is good and that people who would never be able to publish a book otherwise have the opportunity to do so, but it’s bad and that the market is flooded with books and it’s very difficult to sell them. It is also more competitive to acquire traditional publisher or literary agent.

  1. What challenges did you overcome to write this book? My challenges related to publishing and marketing. Writing was largely the easy part. Figuring out the publishing – both self-publishing and traditional publishing – world was difficult. It is still a learning process. Every day I feel like I am familiarizing myself even more.

8. How would you describe your writing style? I’m not a typical author in that I don’t sit down at the computer to write. Instead, I sit down at the computer to study God’s Word and prepare sermons and my books develop from that material. Let me elaborate. There might be some space between these two extremes, but for simplicity’s sake, let’s say pastors take two approaches with their sermons:

  • Abbreviated notes of a few hundred words. Phrases and keywords meant to remind them what to say. This isn’t to say these pastors don’t study. I’m sure they do. But they don’t write out most of what they plan to say.
  • Transcripts with thousands of words. This is me. I write out my entire sermon, and go over it with my wife Thursday nights. A wonderful family in our church sends over some kids to watch our kids. We go over the sermon again Saturday morning. I wake up early on Sunday to pray and look over my notes again. Each time I go over my notes I’m refining and polishing them.

My books come from my sermon transcripts, which take twenty-to-thirty hours of work each week. This means each book contains hundreds of hours of study in God’s Word.

9. If people can buy or read one book this week or month, why should it be yours?  Great question. My books are thoroughly biblical. They come from sermons that I have invested 20 to 30 hours of studying God’s Word each week. I don’t think many people can say this. I believe every point I make is backed up by Scripture and when I use illustrations they support Scripture, versus finding Scripture to support illustrations. My books will help people grow in the related areas of their lives, as well as their understanding of Scripture. One of the most common pieces of feedback I have received is that I use versus in ways that are understandable, clear, and very beneficial.
