Author Costs & Rewards

Let’s just take a look at the thousands, perhaps tens of thousands of dollars, most authors will need to spend in order to get their book published, promoted, and sold.

When seeking to improve and package their writing in order to recruit a literary agent or impress a book publisher, authors may:

* Hire an editor

* Attend writing workshops and retreats

* Participate in publishing seminars

* Take courses in an MFA program

Actually, you may also do all of the above if you end up self-publishing.

Authors may also invest in paying for:

* Website development

* SEO

* Book reviews

* Managing social media

* Book give-aways

* Book award submissions

* Social media influencer endorsements

* Advertising

* Book publicist

* Blog tour

* Best-seller campaign

* Select pay for play media opportunities

Authors, if they don’t spend money to address various needs, they certainly pay with the commodities of time, sweat, and mindshare. They pay with the sacrifice of trading living for writing, of dealing with the constant fear of rejection, and the pain of being ignored. They already pay when in therapy and in lost wage opportunities. They may even pay with addictions, broken relationships, overall health or sleep.

Wow, when you list it this way, one can get overwhelmed or intimidated. Do not fret. Many authors succeed by taking various paths, and not all of them require spending tons of money. One should only spend what they can afford.

Whatever authors spend, the key is to do so intelligently, willingly, and with your eyes wide open. It is an investment in your author brand for the long-term and to acquire book sales in the short-term. Luckily, there are many free and paid resources available to you, and I have no doubt that a great book with some financial assistance, can find its readership.

There is a cost to being an author — and there also can be a tremendous pay-off and reward. Just keep writing — and invest accordingly.
