Do Books Offer Truth?

Which information source can we trust to deliver the truth to us? Most people will find little reason to trust in any of the following:

* Mainstream newspapers, magazines, radio shows, TV stations, newswires
* Alternative news media outlets
* Social media platforms
* Blogs
* Podcasts
* Corporate press releases
* Advertisements
* Hollywood movie houses and streaming services
* Independent documentarians
* Government websites
* Non-profit newsletters

Why should no one trust any of the above?

Their track record. It is bad and getting worse.

Are books any better? I am fearful of answering this.

Each of the resources just named has some type of an agenda that is fueled by conflicting interests.  Money is always a big factor. So is favoritism, unintended or conscious bias, ignorance/sloppiness/lack of training/lack of double-checking it and lack of safeguards.

So many people want to protect their jobs, enrich themselves, or serve a goal that may involve a business, politics, a social issue, or a religious belief — and they influence which truths we are exposed to.

The media choose what is covered and how it is covered. It has inherent bias and/or an agenda. How the media consumer absorbs it all, from his or her misperceptions and prejudices, will further filter how the truth is taken in.

People know our media is manipulated and staged to divide us, sell to us, and keep us engaged for ad money. We know our data is followed, sold, and used. And yet, we come back for more — each and every one of us.

There is no truth that we agree on! We mistrust, yet we hope or believe otherwise.

Most people know they are being lied to, sold something, or manipulated — they just might not know how and when. And they want to turn a blind eye to things and not believe that their views are based on the BS that was fed to them.

I know Yahoo only feeds me stories that agree with my views, and that these stories range from opinions to manipulated facts. But I keep reading.

Why!?

Because sometimes they are right about something or they champion my cause. Oy, I have allowed the media to use me and my desires, biases, and needs against me.

Are books any better?

Probably not.

Who fact checks, especially the self-published?

What is the gatekeeper agenda of the Big 5 publishers?

Are consumers only buying books that offer content the reader is predisposed to like or be familiar with?

Books can be beautiful and powerful, but they too, one by one, can contain incorrect, distorted, or cooked up information.

What is the solution?

*Be aware, as a consumer, of content veracity.

*Recognize the problem.

*Stop being a part of it.

*Encourage others to wake up.

*Advocate for higher standards.

*Check on the facts before you share/forward content from others.

*Hold yourself to a higher standard as a writer.

Our media may have failed us, but let’s seek to preserve books as a forum for truth.
