1) What motivated you to turn an
idea/experience into fiction? There are people every yauthor knows, friends or
acquaintances who are in real life possible "fictional
characters." For me, writing fiction is all about characters.
Once I turned my two college chums, twins, into fictional characters, I knew I
could build a plot around them.
2) What is your novel about & who is it
for? The Brovelli Brothers
are used car dealers in Oakland, California, across the bay from San
Francisco during the late turbulent Sixties. When they find the dead body of
lovely Winona Davis in the trunk of a car they just repossessed,
the twins are launched on their first adventure as amateur sleuths. I
believe my novel will appeal to all lovers of mysteries from Thrillers to Hard
Boiled Detective Fiction. I believe the novel will also appeal to readers
interested in the history of the United States during the Vietnam War period,
which is the setting for all of the books in the series.
3) What takeaways do you want your readers to
be left with? First and foremost, I
want my readers to be left with the aftertaste of a good mystery. I would also
want my readers to understand the cultural, social, and political complexities
of the time period in which this story takes place.
4) How did you decide on the title of your
book and book cover design?
Since the book is about two used car dealers and I envisioned the novels as a
series, I needed a title that would fit all the forthcoming books. Thus each
title had to include the name of a particular car that would be found in
the first chapter of every novel and be associated with the plot in some way.
The cover was designed by Epicenter/Camel Press.
5) What words of wisdom do you have for your
fellow writers? I
wouldn't presume to have any wisdom to impart to all the marvelous mystery
writers whose books I've loved reading. However, for those writers still
struggling to see their books in print, keep at it. Thrust your characters to
lead the way. Good characters will never fail you.
6) What trends in the book world do you see and where do you see the book publishing industry heading? I see the recent trend of electronic books (Kindle and others) flattening out and readers returning to the delight of words on a page of paper. This will result in a symbiotic relationship that will only strengthen the publishing industry.
