How Authors Launch A Non-Profit

For those authors who are wondering how they can start a non-profit and avoid the legal and financial pitfalls — and perhaps avoid or minimize the need to hire a costly lawyer or accountant — they should read this blog post.

Why would authors create a non-profit?

Many authors like to align with a charitable cause. Why not become that charity?

With an author-run non-profit, authors can:

* Serve a good cause and control where money that is raised is applied to.

* Be viewed by the public as a do-gooder and as a result, can help with your branding.

* Deduct many expenses.

* Draw a salary from it.

* Avoid paying sales tax on items purchased.

* Might be able to buy property without paying property tax in some cases.

Before you start a non-profit, explore if one already exists with a similar mission. If so, consider supporting or collaborating with it — or learn what they do well and either copy them or find a better way to raise funds, create awareness, and serve the community.
