5,000 new books are published daily in America. Could Johannes Guttenberg have envisioned such mass output when he perfected the movable type printing press more than six centuries ago? Are we at the point where there are too many books?
I love books and believe that every book has a
right to be published. Free speech, period. If a book commits legally proven
libel or defamation, it should be removed from circulation. But, society cannot
realistically embrace all of the books that are out there. No one has the
capacity to read well over 99.99 percent of what is published.
So, if so many books and choices exist, but the
vast majority of people lack the time, money, need, or desire to read any more
than a few out of the two million new books released annually, too many books
that are worthy of attention go unnoticed and bereft of a readership.
Is the enemy of a good book too many mediocre or
bad books — and not another good book? The market is so flooded that consumers
easily miss thousands of potentially amazing books. The great ones mesh into
the invisible cloud with the lousy ones. The vast majority of books are
mediocre, and a significant minority are awful.
What can help us dig through the clutter?
* Better quality control amongst self-publishers.
* More effort by consumers to find the best books.
* Inventing a system that is more comprehensive
and less biased than the current scattered array of book reviewers.
* Doing away with paid reviews and keeping it a
merit-based system.
* Not relying on one search engine — Google— or
one bookseller — Amazon — to dictate search results and reviews of all books.
I advocate for the creation of better books, for
us to be a nation of books, for books to be sold and talked about everywhere,
and for authors to write the wrongs of the world with facts, ideas, and
vision. Books are near and dear to me — and I hope they will be to all people.
We just need a better way to alert people to the truly wonderful books that are
out there.
