Self-Help Advice For Authors Marketing Their Books

There are plenty of self-help, inspirational, and motivational books out there. Their advice can generally be applied to your health, wealth, relationships, and all aspects of your life. They can also be applied to how you approach your book marketing. Here are 14 applications for self-help guidance, as it can be used to help authors in their book promotion efforts:

1.      Quit complaining!

No whining, whimpering, crying, or sounding like a victim. Take responsibility for your success and overcome challenges, shortcomings, barriers, and losses. Your fate is in your hands.

2.      Create your opportunities

You don’t need to wait for opportunities to come, nor do you need to ask anyone for permission to succeed. Create your own opportunity.

3.      Set your goals

You will achieve once you set your mind to what you want to accomplish. Be specific, set deadlines, seek help, and build on small successes. When you reach a goal, set a new one.

4.      Turn your passion into profits

Do what makes you happy, what you’re good at, and what other people enjoy about you. That’s writing books. But don’t stop there. Promote, promote, promote. Turn your hobby into a vocation.

5.      Make deeper connections

The people -- quantity and quality -- in your life will determine how much fulfillment and success that you will have.

6.      Stretch yourself… take risks

Reach beyond your means, get out of your comfort zone, and take a chance. Experiment. Do more, do different, do new. The way to get ahead is to push yourself and go beyond what you think are your boundaries or limitations.

7.      Behave as if your ideal self would

Act like a winner. Do what one who already is a successful author would do. Play the role you want to actually be in. No need to wait or act otherwise.

8.      Take a break

Sometimes you need a break from what you’ve been doing to promote your book. Clear your mind. Refuel your energy. Get away from what you are too close to. Escape to the movies, beach, dinner out, see a friend, take a walk, go on vacation -- pause things.

9.      Follow your hopes and not your fears

Tackle book marketing on the offensive. In other words, go for it. Don’t act conservatively or out of fear. Just pursue your goals and don’t let made-up barriers slow you down or throw you off course.

10.  Act on your dreams and goals

Keep an eye on the prize. Don’t just set goals or have dreams. Take concrete action steps every day to work towards achieving the things you’ve already envisioned for yourself.

11.  Explore your options

There’s no one way to live life or to market a book. Experiment, diversify, and explore the many ways that may work for your marketing style.

12. Network with people who can help you

Build genuine, authentic and useful connections. Make deeper connections. They can be online or in-person, but keep finding people who can do things for you and open new doors to you.

13. Keep learning, upgrading, and developing yourself

Your education begins when formal schooling ends. Keep learning and pursuing knowledge. Same’s true about book marketing. Keep up on the latest tools, techniques, and things that can help you promote effectively.

14. Find your mentor and role model

We all need support. In life, we lean on therapists, family, lovers, friends, colleagues, clergy, and others. Same is true for authors. Pursue your goals with the help of following a role model or consulting with a mentor.
