Book World Misses Media Kings

Larry King, a lovable and friendly news personality whose career spanned six decades, died this weekend, possibly from corona. From his early days on the radio in Miami to his 25-year run on CNN, the Brooklyn-born media star interviewed over 50,000 people, including many authors – as well as ordinary people, presidents, industry leaders, superstar athletes, Hollywood royalty, and experts in many fields.

His interview style was not that of an interrogator, but more of an enabler. He asked simple, unemotional, non-judgmental questions that put the subject at ease and allowed for unfettered mic time to freely discuss ideas and issues. Such an on-gothchya guy style would be refreshing in today’s hyper-sensitive, partisan media that opinionates ruthlessly attacks, advocates rather than reports, and judges rather than informs.

King, who came off as a grandpa with his suspenders and mild manner, had battled heart ailments and lung cancer. He was wed eight times to seven women. He was a real guy who spoke to the average American. We will miss him.

On the same day King died, Tom Brokaw, an NBC News legend, retired after 50+ years in the news media. It is hard to not reflect back and believe our news media was in better hands decades ago with men like Brokaw and King informing us of the world news.
