Celebrate University Press Books

University Press Week is being celebrated now. Why is such a thing even needed?

University presses are very important to the book publishing eco-system. In between the big corporate conglomerate publishing houses and self-publishing, you have smaller, independent presses and the university presses.

The latter will often have the foresight and courage to publish what the Big 5 believe to be insignificant or unprofitable books. Most importantly, the voices published by universities may offer those of the community that are often shunned, forgotten, misunderstood, or ignored. The minority/contrarian/diverse ideas, people, and opinions need to be heard.

University presses often explore history, culture, ideology, and rich areas of society that need further exploration. you may not look at who publishes a book, but very often you could be reading a book from a university press and not know it.

“University presses remain devoted to the core mission of introducing new ideas and authors to readers everywhere," said Association of University Presses Executive Director Peter Berkery recently.

University presses are to be commended for their scholarly work in uncovering and preserving historical events, figures, ideas, and documents. They illuminate our shared humanity and uniquely promote the literary arts.
