To be a reader, perhaps an enthusiastic one,
of books, sounds appealing. I am like you, getting plenty out of what I read.
Books can inform, enlighten, inspire, or entertain us. The best ones offer many
or all of these traits. They make us feel, question, wonder, analyze, cry,
laugh, fear — and get smarter. They even spur us to see live life differently,
for the better. But there is a high price to pay for these benefits.
No, it is not the collective money that you spend to acquire your books that I speak of. You now have a great debt, where you must live in accordance with higher ideals. You can’t betray your knowledge and continue to live as if still unaware or with an incorrect understanding of things. You now must take responsibility for what you know. It is your time to turn a book’s words into actions.
Once you feel truth and know it in your heart, how dare you not live to achieve greater things, champion higher values, and teach others to acquire your knowledge?
Reading should not be a selfish endeavor, though you do act alone, reading by yourself and melding what you consume into your existing impression of the world. Books alter your conceptualization of whom you think you are or have been. But this is not really an isolated experience. You are supposed to apply what you have consumed to live your best life possible.
Your reading of fictional books expands your power of imagination, provides you with an escape from the world, delivers the opportunity to try on the lives of others without risking anything, and takes you to places you haven’t visited, to experience a past that no longer is, or live in worlds that can never be.
Books can frighten without harming, give you
adventure without pain, and get you erotically aroused without violating a
relationship. They can set the standards for perfection, while encouraging you
to simply love who you are and appreciate your limitations. Fiction can make us
feel justice is possible, act like a hero, and believe that good can defeat
evil. Through fiction, we may discover our true selves, and begin to live
authentically under a realigned approach to the world.
Reading non-fiction should:
*Make you smarter.
*Teach you how to do things.
*Inspire and empower you.
*Provide you with a how-to manual for almost anything.
*Connect you to the world beyond your travels.
*Show you art and beauty.
*Make you appreciate nature and treasure wildlife.
*Reveal truths and quiet your soul.
*Alert you to new things and fresh ideas while reaffirming what you know but forgot or doubted.
*Help you raise a new generation.
Reading any book should also:
*Improve your vocabulary.
*Help make you a better writer.
*Provide comfort when no humans are around.
*Assist your capacity to feel and reason.
*Expose you to other cultures, places, and beliefs.
*Give you something to talk about.
*Engage your mind to stave off Alzheimer’s.
You gain a lot from reading books. Keep reading. But start to pay down the enormous debt that you have accumulated.
