Newspapers Authors Should Contact

I didn’t want to admit to myself what I read in the statistics about newspaper circulation in our country, but it is right there for all to see. Readership of newspapers is way down and does not appear to be rebounding anytime soon, if ever.

However, there are still many reasons an author wants to appear in a newspaper, including:

* Earning third-party validation by an authoritative brand name media outlet.

* Other major media outlets and people on social media pay attention to it.

* The publication still has a following of significance.

“The estimated total U.S. daily newspaper circulation (print and digital combined) in 2020 was 24.3 million for weekday and 25.8 million for Sunday, each down 6% from the previous year,” according to Pew Research.

By comparison, just two decades earlier, in 20oo, an LA Times story reported a survey of 785 newspapers reporting daily figures showed an overall circulation drop to 49.5 million from 49.7 million amid competition from other media, according to an analysis of the audit report by the newspaper association.

What type of coverage can an author shoot for when it comes to newspapers?

* Book review

* Feature story

* Quoted in a story

* By-line article-op-ed

Many newspapers have shrunk or eliminated book review sections. Further, newspapers increasingly rely on syndicated content from newswires like Associated Press or Gannett News Wire.

Below are the top 25 circulating newspapers in America, as of 2022, according to Alliance For Audited Media:
