Interview With Inspirational Author Ashley Haseotes

The Unspoken: A Soul’s Reflection on Healing from Abuse, Neglect, and Chronic Pain

1. What motivated you to write your book, to force you from taking an idea or experience and turning it into this book? Writing this book was not planned. Instead, after a deep and profound therapy session in 2019, I opened my computer and began cataloging my life. My plan at that point was to put my big life moments in chronological order, as a template for discussion with my new therapist. Instead of beginning my healing in therapy by recanting my past, we tackled how I was feeling in the present moment. Never once touching my document, I began healing by finally feeling what was going on inside my body. I kept writing, I think mainly so I could feel I finished what I started, which ultimately became The Unspoken.

2. What is it about and who is it for? The Unspoken is my memoir, my story. This book is for everyone who feels overwhelmed, anxious, had a difficult childhood, damaged parental relationships and who may be on a healing journey.

3. What takeaways might the reader be left with after reading it? We must feel in order to heal. We mustn’t ignore what has troubled us in our lives. And healing is possible for all of us; in fact, it is our divine right.  Since everything is energy, the stars, moon, sun, plants, humans, our thoughts and what happened to us; it is all energy and energy cannot be destroyed. This has been proven by science. If we cannot destroy energy this means what happened to us has been stored somewhere, usually in our body. Our body keeps score of the events and how we feel about these events in our lives, if unattended to, we can become ill, anxious, depressed, withdrawn and unhappy.  In my book, I share with the reader my traumas, emotions, and feelings very authentically and honestly. I also share how I overcame debilitating migraines. My readers will be left feeling inspired and hopeful for their own healing journeys. The Unspoken is not a “how to” book, but I do share the many modalities I used to get back on my feet.

4. How did you decide on your book’s title and cover design?  The title was a work in progress from the beginning. I had 5 working titles. As with many other big questions in my life, I meditated on it; ultimately coming up with The Unspoken. It was my unspoken that brought me to chronic illness and pain; the title felt fitting.  I wanted people to see my face, look into my eyes; to trust me. I knew I wanted to be on the front cover for my readers to feel connected to me.

5. What advice or words of wisdom do you have for fellow writers? We all have a story to tell. Don’t judge yourself in the early stages- just write. Dump everything onto the pages. You will weed out and organize later, but in the beginning just get it all out. Be honest, authentic and tell stories. People relate to stories, and they identify with authenticity.  Don’t be afraid to be vulnerable, it is our purpose of healing; to share our stories. It gives others permission to heal.

6. What trends in the book world do you see -- and where do you think the book publishing industry is heading?  The publishing world is tricky. Unless you are a celeb or famous in some way the traditional route is almost unattainable. Self-publishing takes a ton of work, and you must know what you are doing when it comes to formatting, editing etc.…if you want to have a professional product in the end. I was lucky to find Made for Success, they are a mid-level publisher. You must get accepted, but once you are you have creative control and lots of help along the journey of writing your book.

7. What challenges did you overcome to write this book? Writing a memoir is sort of like reliving your life all over again. I had increased symptoms of pain and anxiety while I was writing. I was able to work through that by lots of self-care and keeping regular sessions with my pain coach. I was not really a good student, so writing with proper grammar and voice took lots of effort and editing. I wouldn’t say that I had many other challenges other than those.

8. How would you describe your writing style? I write how I talk! Fast and raw, I don’t linger, and I get deep quickly. I am not sure what style that is per say; I guess I am just me.

9. If people can buy or read one book this week or month, why should it be yours? You never know when you are writing a book if what you are trying to convey will actually come through. Intent is only half the project. Of the 20 or so people who read my book prior to print they all walked away with something helpful. Many felt inspired to tell their own story of pain to purpose. A few told me that they were so happy to finally have words to how they had been feeling all their life.  If you love real life stories of triumph, pain and healing this book is for you!
