I have a story to tell that dates back to September of 1972 – a half-century ago. God, I sound old, but it seems like yesterday – and of course, there is a book marketing lesson here.
I can still hear the metal and wood chair
hitting the tiled floor of my sixth-grade classroom. It was the sound of anger
and frustration. It was the theme music for a fight.
Keith Suber, all jaw and muscle, a full head taller than me, tossed his chair down as he lunged towards me with hate quickly shifting all of his blood towards his curled-up hands of stone.
I rose up from my chair, taking a step towards this charging bull. We met inches apart. His hot fiery breath rained down on me, his nostrils flaring, his body hulking.
I was overmatched but just as content to stare him down, for in the days of school and life, one cannot retreat unless they forever want to be chased. Even one beating averts a hundred others, but evidence of weakness shows up like a loose string on a shirt that, when tugged, expands into a gaping hole from which there is no thread to stitch it up.
He yelled like a junkyard dog barks to warn you not to come into its space.
I don’t recall what he said, but I can still feel the force of his sound waves shooting into me and some, initially escaping me, even bouncing off the classroom walls and back onto me.
I wasn’t crazy enough to throw the first punch and I would have been no match for him if he had released his fury upon my body. But we looked like two angry animals who had not eaten in days, ready to tear into each other.
Mr. Turkish, who may have been shorter than the imposing pugilist that raged centimeters from me, rushed towards us like a first responder to a devastating accident. He quickly separated us and just like that, I preserved my reputation as one who wouldn’t take shit and I suppose Keith did nothing to detract from his fearsome and imposing image.
The book marketing lesson? Stand up for
yourself and know that sometimes posturing is all that you need to get what you
want. No one will know if you are unprepared, scared, or even incompetent –
just appear with confidence and enthusiasm and you can sell yourself.
