How Authors Reach High, But Enjoy Where They Are

After recently reading Embrace Your Almost: Find Clarity And Contentment In The In-Betweens, Not-Quites, And Unknowns, by Jordan Lee Dooley, a best-selling author, I felt more clarity in how I live and write. You may feel the same way upon reading her easy-flowing self-help book.

She writes: “Instead of hustling non-stop and driving ourselves into the ground, we’d be wise to set meaningful, clear goals based on our needs, what we currently have, and our overarching purpose. All too often we set unrealistic and even unnecessary goals, and as I have learned the hard way, that can lead to hustle and burnout ….. Examine your own life and goal setting.”

The book offers a three-question approach to evaluating what we’re doing. She asks that we answer these questions:

  1. What do I truly want? What do you really value?
  2. Why do I want it? Why am I pursuing it?
  3. How am I going to steward it? How will I cultivate the life in front of me?

We’re always in the act of doing/ pursuing while trying to find satisfaction in what we are or have. It’s a tough balance -- to be happy as is while always pursuing more.

“To be clear, your life doesn’t mean you can’t aim for more,” she writes. “It doesn’t mean you can’t hope, plan, or dream of possibilities. It doesn’t mean you quit longing from whatever feels out of reach. It simply means you learn to sit with the tension of both disappointment or possibility. You allow yourself to simultaneously aim for what could be and make the most of what currently is,”

So how does this translate to you and your writing career?

·         Figure out what you want as a writer.

·         Know why you want this.

·         Figure out how you will get to where you desire to be.

Don’t just go day-by-day on a path to nowhere. Have a purpose and focus. Dream high. Them, make it happen.

Strive to be grounded in reaching to achieve more than you have thought was in your reach, and though you push to succeed beyond your limits, always enjoy the journey and feel joy in what you’ve accomplished and of where you are now. Aspire, but feel satisfaction in the now.

“If you’re trying to achieve, there will be roadblocks. I’ve had them; everybody has had them. But obstacles don’t have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don’t turn around and give up, figure out how to climb it, go through it or work around it,””

-Machael Jordan

“If you’re only tool is a hammer, all your problems will be nails.”

-Mark Twain

“The greatest obstacle to discovery is not ignorance- it’s the illusion of knowledge.”

- Daniel J Boorstin, Historian

“Absence is much harder to detect than presence. Another words, we place greater emphasis on what is present than on what is absent.”

-The Art Of Thinking Clearly

“You can not change the people around you, but you can change the people you choose to be a round.”

-The 4-Word Answer

“Your dreams are the blueprint to reality.”

-Golfer Greg Norman

“Wake up every morning with the idea that something wonderful is possible today.”

“No matter what challenge or obstacle you face, whether it’s personal, professional, or global, there’s a path ahead, It’s all figure-out-able. You’ll find away or make away, if you’re willing to be relentless, stay nimble, and keep taking action.”

-Thought Leader Marie Forelo

“We waste our time waiting for the ideal push to appear. But it never does. Because we forget that paths are made by walking, not waiting. And no, you shouldn’t feel more confident before you take the next step. Taking the next step is what builds your confidence.”
