Market Your Books Like It’s July 4th

Authors looking to market themselves should listen to the story I am about to share.

When I was in Huntington Beach, California for the July 4th festivities, I was treated to a parade that is billed as the largest July 4th parade west of the Mississippi. It is over 115 years old. They take their patriotism seriously there!

Lots of old cars, military vehicles, marching bands, a beauty queen, some politicians, and many other marchers made this parade a success.  Between those in the parade — and those lining the streets to cheer them on — there were lots of people on display looking for attention.

You had your folks with American flags in all forms — shirts, shorts, hats, capes, posters, etc — and you had women in bikini thongs strutting their made-in-America goods. People with dogs, strange hats, funky glasses, retro bicycles, skateboards, and colorful attire were all around.

The scene made me realize how hard people were working to market themselves. They weren’t selling an item or service; just themselves. They were the product. They begged for glances to come their way, for memories of strangers to be filled with random mental snapshots of them.

Human ego was on display anywhere you looked. It was a show indeed.

So what grabbed my attention?

Beautiful bodies
Colorful clothes
Loud noises
Cute dogs
People doing the unusual
Freak show antics

Do authors have to wear outfits that expose body parts or be attached at the hip to a prop?
Well, it can’t hurt, but not necessarily.

The first rule of sticking out from a crowd is be different. If you look and sound like everyone else, you are no different.

Second, have the goal and intention of getting attention. It won’t just happen on its own. Advocate for yourself and push to get attention.

Third, show up. You have to be in it to win it.

Fourth, smile, wave, and look confident.

Ok, so as an author you may not literally attend a parade, but you need to just have that frame of mind, and approach things in a way that calls attention to yourself.
