The Writer’s New Mantra?

Why do people write books?

Most authors have no choice. It is their destiny. They heed a calling and practice their craft because it is simply what they do. It is their identity.  They are their words.

It is in their blood and their soul. Experiences, ideas, and dreams lead them to come to the table and write. What else affords one the opportunity to live inside their head and yet create boundless worlds with new rules to play new games-- legally, morally, scientifically, politically, or sexually?

Quite simply, they write to exist and exist to write. For so many millions of writers, the act of writing is so natural, so necessary to their existence, so fulfilling.

Writers can pen a thousand lives and inspire others to live a life of other. Books can be a mirrors of ourselves -- or windows to worlds unseen and otherwise untouchable.

If I had to summarize why authors write, it would come down to some combination of all of these things:

Purpose: This is their undeniable destiny.

Pleasure: They enjoy the acts of creating, researching, interviewing, writing, and even editing.

Passion: They thrive on the creative process.

Pride: Ego drives many writers.

Power: They may feel their laptop is a sword.

Pay-off: They hope their writings make a difference in the world.

But perhaps writers take part in something beyond themselves. They are not creators, but mere messengers, here to connect for us what seemingly has not been made clear by the forces that be. Maybe writers are here to reinforce what already is, rather than to help us dream of what could be.

All that I know is writers live to write, and write to live.
