Interview With Author Angela Glaser Bowers, Ph.D.

1.What inspired you to write this book? Who isn't inspired by a great story with many layers of complicated circumstances and challenges to which most people can relate.

2. What exactly is it about and who is it written for? The book is about Emma, my client and myself, as we worked together for six years.  She struggled with many intense battles, and I, as her therapist, frequently struggled with my own insecurities. The book outlines the many unconventional strategies I took as her therapist. While I was never unethical, I did things that would have shocked many conventionally trained therapists. Emma's writings to me in the form of letters, poems, faxes and emails were included, as they give the reader a very personal insight into the thought processes of this vulnerable client, as she struggled in therapy. The book details many therapeutic strategies that could help most readers as they identify some of their own issues in Emma's. It is a fascinating story with a positive outcome, and many harrowing moments in the middle. The book is written for anyone who has ever struggled with depression, anxiety, trauma and more. It can be enjoyed by people of all ages. I also hope that young therapists in training would find it interesting and inspiring as they embark on their careers.

3. What do you hope readers will get out of reading your book? I hope readers will not only get enjoyment but also useful advice in dealing with their own issues.

4. How did you decide on your book's title and cover design? The title describes the essential theme of the book. My client and I both had significant things to overcome. The book cover was based on the symbolism of butterflies and sunflowers. Butterflies representing change and metamorphosis, and sunflowers representing optimism, beauty, strength, and turning towards the light, which represents truth and honesty. Sunflowers were also meaningful to Emma.

5. What advice or words or wisdom do you have for fellow wtiters--other than run!?Take it a little at a time. A huge project, like writing a book, can be daunting. Write a little each day to stay in the groove. Organize your material before you sit to write, so it flows well as you express your thoughts.

6. What trends in the book world do you see--and where do you think the book publishing industry is heading? I think people are more interested in audio books than they used to be. I think thick books may scare the average reader, so keeping a book a manageable size might attract a bigger audience.

7. Were there experiences in your personal life or career that came in handy when writing this book? The experiences of my professional life were very much the theme of this book.

8. How would you describe your writing style? Which writers or books is your writing similar to? My writing style is pretty straight forward, clear and to the point. Perhaps similar to Dr. Lori Gottlieb who wrote, Maybe You Should Talk to Someone.

9. What challenges did you overcome in the writing of this book? I overcame the challenge of intimidation, the challenge of entering a world that was unknown to me in terms of being an author, and I overcame the challenge of inertia.

10. If people can buy or read one book this week or month, why should it be yours? If  people can read one book this week, it should be mine because people will relate and identify with vulnerability. People need to feel hope and inspiration when they deal with difficult life issues, and this book offers both. It also offers a personal glimpse into the life of a therapist and perhaps can demystify therapy for those people who have considered it, but have been too nervous to try it.
