1. What inspired you to write this book? Life’s trauma and everyday occurrences that moved me in my beautiful environment. I wanted to leave this collection to my grown daughters that they might understand me a little better.
2. What exactly is it about and who is it written for? Bare is about my childhood, grief in my adult life and the beautiful environment in which I live. It is written for anyone who may resonate with the experience of my childhood and anyone who may love the beauty of the natural world.
3. What do you hope readers will get out of reading your book? I hope the reader will be moved by the subject of each piece, stirring up similar memories of their own, and be moved by the language of the poetry itself.
4. How did you decide on your book’s title and cover design? The title, bare refers to the bare emotion of each piece. I’m not entirely pleased with the cover design. In hindsight, I would have chosen an articulated figure falling backward through space.
5. What advice or words of wisdom for fellow writers? Write what you feel. Poetry should not be too wordy - less is more. The smallest occurrence in life can be written about but make it melodic. Choose the cadence carefully.
6. What trends in the book world do you see, and where do you think the book publishing industry is heading? The trends in the book world that I’m seeing is an onslaught of regency romance and novels geared to women, aged 16 - 30. It’s very difficult to weed through it all and find an author who writes beautifully. Simon VanBooy is one such writer who writes so beautifully that I find myself putting his book down and being so moved I will be moved to tears over one sentence. Books of poetry are out there but are not often featured. I’d like to see more books geared to older, educated women who delight in the written word.
7. Were there experiences in your personal life or career that came in handy while writing this book? I would agree with that 100 percent. This book is mostly memoir.
8. How would you describe your writing style? Which writers is your writing similar to? My writing style is prose, often memoir. My writing style is similar to David Whyte, who I greatly admire!
9. What challenges did you overcome in the writing of this book? Some of the pieces brought such painful, vivid memories, it took some time to formulate my “poetic thoughts” and organize them into prose.
10. If people can buy or read one book this month, why should it be yours? I believe people should introduce more poetry into their literary diet. Perhaps it could tempt them to review their own lives and formulate their thoughts into poetry or prose. It can become self-therapy to form their memories into succinct prose.
