1. What inspired you to write this book?
The concept of time being a river is very
common in literature, as well as society "Time flows from the past to
the present." However, being someone who has spent a lifetime fishing
rivers, I have noted that rivers don't act in such a simplistic way, and when I
have contemplated life in this context I have seen similarities. For example:
Most people will have at least some time in their lives where things are placid
and seem to be moving steadily forward. Then there are other times when life
seems to be moving too fast to catch up, as well as there have been times when
life seems to be stuck in a repeating cycle that can seem impossible to
get out of. (An eddie if you will.) Additionally, there have been several
societies that have had the concept of life being a tapestry or a pattern that
has been woven by the God's. (The Greeks had the Fate's, The Norse had the
Norn's etc.) The idea struck me that both of those concepts could work
together if the tapestry or pattern was within the river of time itself.
This book is an exploration of that idea.
2. What exactly is it about and who
is it written for?
This book is about a man "Joe Samson" that is caught in a huge vortex in the river of time that pulls him into two different directions in time and space. Creating two separate lives for one soul that can only exist for the duration of the eddie, and he must decide which life he wants to continue. This has been complicated by the inattention of the river's watchman, an immortal fisherman named Mac, as both lives had gone on for years and have both had children and established lives. Mac gives Joe two weeks to live the other life where he discovers he is married to his soulmate and has a great life, with twin sons that he fathered before entering the vortex. What would seem to be a simple choice is complicated by Joe's bond with his daughter from the alternate time. Mac takes Joe up the river of time to learn from his past lives and figure out the nature of his connection to both his wife in one life and his daughter in the other. As well as the truth of the immortal plane and Heaven itself.
As to who it was written for:
I think most everyone has "The one that got away" story whether it's a lost love or a job opportunity or something that they wish they could have again, and that they can at least partially relate to the story. It's a fictional fantasy time travel story so it's probably not for the hardcore historian, but for anyone who enjoys adventure with a bit of the metaphysical fiction I would hope they enjoy the ride.
3. What do you hope readers will get out
of reading your book?
First and foremost, I hope the reader will enjoy the characters and the journey. Above and beyond that, I would think if someone were to be able to connect with one of my characters and maybe do some self-reflection and learn something about themselves would be the greatest honor a writer could ask for.
4. How did you decide on your book’s title and
cover design?
As for the title, I think there are lots of books about "The river of time". So I needed something different that might intrigue people. The idea for the cover design was directly from the pages of the book. It's not exactly how I envisioned it but, it's pretty close.
5. What advice or words of wisdom do you have
for fellow writers – other than run!?
I don't know enough to give advice about this to anyone.
6. What trends in the book world do you see --
and where do you think the book publishing industry is heading?
The only trend I can see is that most of the popular books are in digital format. Kindle, Nook, etc. I know of several people that are waiting for my book to come out in that format because they don't buy paper books anymore.
7. Were there experiences in your
personal life or career that came in handy when writing this book?
Yes, as mentioned above I am an outdoorsman and fisherman. I have watched my fishing line get pulled in two directions simultaneously by the river's current, and seen a bobber spin in circles when caught in a vortex. Additionally, parts of the book are set in a prison which I have worked at for two decades now. There is no getting by the fact that this book is fictional, however there is a lot of my life that I have used to fill out the characters and the story.
8. How would you describe your writing style?
Which writers or books is your writing similar to? I would like to describe my writing style as thoughtful and fun, but with heart. As to what writers that are similar to my style, I don't know if I am really qualified to compare myself with any big-name writer. Pretty much anyone who can merge real life and fantasy would probably be a fair comparison.
9. What challenges did you overcome in the
writing of this book?
I am Very Dyslexic, which is why I left LSSU after just one year. So yes, that was a challenge in writing this. My vocabulary is way bigger than my ability to spell. Thank God for the spell check. I had an occupational therapist once that almost fell out of his chair when he found out that I actually read for pleasure.
10. If people can buy or read one book this
week or month, why should it be yours?
I think it's a thoughtful time travel adventure that will make them think and has a few twists and turns that most people don't expect.
