1.
What inspired you
to write this book? What inspired me? According to my family lore, my
mother's 23rd step great grandfather was King William (I) the
Conquerer. I find the story as a fun story but I don't believe. Thus the book
about King William. A friend inspired me to continue to write after the first
book and she is the inspiration for Queen Margaret. My friend has become my
female lead in almost every book after A New King.
2.
What exactly is
it about and who is it written for? What is it about? It is about
peasant boy William, son of a farmer, who meet spoiled brat Margaret, the
daughter of the local lord. They begin a 60-year love affair. As they grow up
and fall in love, William becomes a knight and learns that his uncle is King
Edward and that he is the heir to the throne. The book was written as my love
story to my friend Margaret, and when I wrote it, I don't think it would ever
be published. As for the audience, I never wrote it for a specific group. It
appeals to women.
3. What do you hope readers will get out of
reading your book? I hope people will be able to go to a fantasy world and
escape from the crazy world we live in. Just maybe people reading it could see
themselves in those simpler times. I hope people can see that their can be a
story about knights that doesn't involve dragoons and wizards. Those who have
read the book, have liked the style and get reading and can't stop. This was
the first book that I wrote, where I made sure I didn't use bad language and
sex in the story.
4. How did you decide on your book’s title and
cover design? The title of this book is like the others, it came from
what the book was about. A New King. In the book King Edward, had no heir and
is looking for someone to succeed him. Many of the old Duke want to become king
for themselves or their sons. King Edward chooses A New King, a young man that
would keep the kingdom together for many years. The cover was to show a young
King William and Queen Margaret. In fact the orginial cover art, Margaret was
blond and I had them change it. My friend Margaret who the character was
written for is a brunette.
5. What advice or words of wisdom do you have for
fellow writers – other than run!? I would tell someone who want to start
writing. Don't give up. I had three books written and working on the fourth
before I was able to publish my first book. Don't think you can't write,
because I am still told I can't write and I've published 6 novels. Pick a genre
in which to write and pick a lead character, like the best-selling authors.
Since A New King, I always use William Pembrooks as my main character and he
always find his love, Margaret. The first book I used myself as the character
and found it was a big mistake.
6. What trends in the book world do you see --
and where do you think the book publishing industry is heading? Sadly, I
see writers like me becoming a thing of the past. People are not picking up a
book, but picking up a kindle or iphone. I see more people self-publishing and
physical books are becoming a thing of the past, young people don't seem to
want to read. I had the unfortunate luck to have A New King, published right as
the Covid crisis began.
7. Were there experiences in your
personal life or career that came in handy when writing this book? I
took a creative writing course in college for my English credits, but it was a
friend who did the most to help me. He was an English major in college and he
told me what I was doing wrong and didn't sugar coat. Now I benefit from my
publishing coordinator Kelly Crum, who have helped me through the process. I also
have a friend who proof reads the books before I try to publish them. She tells
me what she like, don't like or what don't make sense. I tend to write a lot of
my personal life history into the book.
8. How would you describe your writing style?
Which writers or books is your writing similar to? My writing style is
unconventional, I write short stories. The first book I wrote, I wrote three
versions of the end, then stories in the middle and finally I wrote the rest of
the book to connect them. That is why that book was over a thousand pages. I tend
to write short stories and then connect the stories. A New King is an exception
and I wrote the entire book in the order it was published. The next three King
books was written as short stories and then put into order. My 6th book
is actually a series of short stories. I don't read much fiction, but what I do
read is those like Tom Clancy and those who write military action novels.
9. What challenges did you overcome in the writing of this book? My biggest challenge is that people say I cannot write. My ex-wife would not allow me to try to publish. Once I was divorced, I began publishing. I published A New King and Long Live the King both during the Covid crisis and there was no promotions or book shows to get them out to the public. Even with multiple books published, I am still told I not smart enough to write. Every time someone tells me that, it drives me to continue to write and publish.
10. If people can buy or read one book this week
or month, why should it be yours? Why should people read my books. It
would give them a chance to escape real life for a while, it is similar to the
Harry Potter books there is no wizards and dragoons. Like every author, we want
to sell books and maybe they might find something in it that they would like
and pick up the sequels or book of a similar genre.
About The Author: I grew up in mid-Michigan, and after a stint in the army, I returned to mid-Michigan and began driving a delivery truck. In 2013, I was injured on the job and went on disability. I began writing after I suffered a heart attack in 1998. I wrote about 35 pages and then put it down and went back to work. My wife had a cancer scare and I picked up the notebook again and began writing for something to do while she was being treated. Even after she was told she didn't have cancer, I kept writing, writing three books. It wasn't until after my divorce was I able to publish any books. Now I live in my hometown and I go to the local coffee shop to write. A New King is the second book that I had published and the first book of a trilogy and there is a sequel.
