A big aspect of marketing a book or one’s self is
about how the writer thinks. His or her attitude and psychological approach to
things could greatly dictate their level of success. A reminder of the ways one
should think for themselves can be found in a book, The Rules of Thinking, by
Richard Templar.
The author, though he was talking generally about
how people can think in a way that empowers them, you could apply his insights
and advice to marketing a book.
He says: “Self-esteem is a big part of what tempts
us to skew our thinking.” Don’t let your ego or sense of self misshape your
approach to your book marketing.
“People who believe they control their own lives
tend to be happier,” says Templar. They also tend to be more productive. You
are in control of your life and you should take ownership of the marketing of
your book. Don’t leave things to chance or at the mercy of another.
“Acceptance is not about giving up,” he writes.
Knowing when to accept a fact or a failure is just as important as knowing when
to persevere and keep fighting to overcome rejection, objection, or challenges.
“Sidestep bad habits” says Templar. “The easiest
time to break a habit is before it starts.” So, avert bad book marketing
habits, including the one where you keep doing what doesn’t work or where you
avoid doing much because you fail to find out what you should be doing. Develop
the habit of marketing your book.
Other insights provided in his book include these:
“Make deadlines your friend.” To be productive and
get things done, act out of a sense of urgency — and impose deadlines on
yourself.
There are no rules. Stop putting constraints or
limits on your thinking or on what you are willing to try.
Be willing and ready to make mistakes. There are
no rights and wrongs in creative thinking. Be willing to fail — embrace it —
take risks and experiment.
“Don’t settle for your first answer… See every
idea as a beginning, not an end point.”
“Stand back and take in the view … look for the
bigger picture in everything you do.”
Consider Option C. Keep exploring what you can do
to market your book.
“Assess the cost of a bad decision.” To do nothing
— or to do the wrong thing — are the same.
“Be honest about your procrastinating…. Look your
decision in the face and admit why you are getting on with it.”
