If you look at the number of units of books sold this year, some trends are starting to develop. Have a look:
·
Mass Market Paperback books are down
17% from a year ago.
·
Board Books for young kids are up
6.4% from last year
·
Adult Fiction is up 6.4% YTD
· YA Nonfiction fell 4.5% YTD
Overall, print sales are flat. In the past year they are up a meager .1%.
Of course, the big trend to follow is how many books are being published. With nearly 7,500 new titles flooding the market each and every day, books are cannibalizing one another.
Three out of four Big 5 publishers who reported their earnings recently said their profits were down from a year ago. Supply chain issues, inflation costs related to printing and shipping, and higher salaries were all cited as areas of concern.
