1. What inspired you to write this book? While overseas in 1990, my daughter was having difficulty getting to sleep at night because she missed her dad. I was asked if I could write a bedtime story to help her fall sleep.
2. What exactly is it about and who is it written for? The story is about a duck family and their friends and their lives on Whisper Pond.
3. What do you hope readers will get out of reading your book? The animals are a metaphor for people we meet in our lives and that we should be careful about how we judge them. That people we meet can have the best of intentions.
4. How did you decide on your book’s title and cover design? As soon as I received the letter requesting I write a bedtime story for my daughter, Daddy Duck came to life in my mind. It took me 30 minutes to write the entire story!
5. What advice or words of wisdom do you have for fellow writers – other than run!? It’s my belief that everyone has a unique set of life experiences and that if your imagination creates a story, write the story or find someone that can help you write the story.
6. What trends in the book world do you see -- and where do you think the book publishing industry is heading? I am not well-versed enough in the book world or book publishing industry to even hazard a guess. Although, I have learned that there is considerable competition with all the books being published annually.
7. Were there experiences in your personal life or career that came in handy when writing this book? Yes. Life lessons from my dad and my military experiences, where the military is truly a representative sample of the country helped create the storyline.
8. How would you describe your writing style? Which writers or books is your writing similar to? That’s a tough one. I have no idea how to answer that question.
9. What challenges did you overcome in the writing of this book? Time. I looked early on to have the book published, but I was met with it either costing a lot of money to pursue publishing or rejection in the form that there is no interest in animals that talk. Of course, the latter rejection made me think of how successful Disney has been with talking animals.
10. If people can buy or read one book this week or month, why should it be yours? For the fun and imagination of animals interacting in their natural habitat and the underlying message of friendship and not judging someone based on first appearance.
