Interview With Author Jamie Cox

1.      What inspired you to write this book? The inspiration to write this book came from watching a lot of movies and television shows. For instance the Vampire Diaries and Disney Channel’s movie Halloweentown. I wanted to create a story that was different and hasn’t been written. I wanted it to be relatable to young people of today and give each character a personality people can relate to.

2.      What exactly is it about and who is it written for? The book is about a young warlock named Al who left his planet to live on Earth. All was going well for him until he got an unpleasant visit from his sister, Katherine. Katherine, who is very powerful, does not trust humans and thinks they are all evil. She is not to be messed with. But as she spends more time on Earth, she realizes she may be wrong. This book reminds us that we shouldn’t judge someone until we really get to know them. We are all different and unique, and we should celebrate that uniqueness. The book is written for teens and young adults. Adults can read it as well but my target audience is young people.

3.      What do you hope readers will get out of reading your book? I hope readers can relate to the characters. They enjoy reading the book.

4.      How did you decide on your book’s title and cover design? The title is true and I hope people agree. I was trying to create a title that is not out there. It’s also the meaning behind the book. The cover I wanted to have the main characters Al and Katerine next to one another. I told the artist I wanted the background to show a sunrise. Purple is also my favorite color and it just made the whole cover look incredible.

5.      What advice or words of wisdom do you have for fellow writers other than run!? My advice for writers: if you have a story you want to write about, do it. If writing is your passion, go for it and give it a try. Plan out your storyline and do your research. If you're looking for a publishing company make sure to do your research. It’s great to get help especially when you're new to this industry.

6.      What trends in the book world do you see and where do you think the book publishing industry is heading? The trends I’m definitely seeing are with social media. Social media is a great way to get your word out there. The writing world is expanding. A lot of books have become movies and television shows. Writers continue to create stories that have touched our hearts.

7.      Were there experiences in your personal life or career that came in handy when writing this book? I have to say in middle school I used to love writing but I never thought about becoming a writer. Watching movies and television shows definitely influenced me to write this book. My favorite author as a kid was Roald Dahl. I love reading his books. Shows and movies I loved were the Vampire Diaries, Halloweentown, Twitches and the list goes on.

8.      How would you describe your writing style? Which writers or books is your writing similar to? My writing style is modern, dramatic and comedic. I am not sure which authors or books my writing is similar to. I got some influence from mainly shows and movies. Some authors I love are Roald Dahl, Jane Austen, Celeste Ng and Nicholas Sparks.

9.      What challenges did you overcome in the writing of this book? The challenges I overcame was trying to write a book that hadn’t been written. I wanted the title to be unique and that people can agree is true. Giving each character their own background. Also trying something new and putting myself out there hoping people will enjoy my book.

10.  If people can buy or read one book this week or month, why should it be yours? People should read my book because it’s entertaining. It has drama, comedy and fantasy. I made it very modern. The main characters on the cover their style is what a lot of young people wear today. The cover is beautiful and I believe people would love the colors. Teens and young people should read it. Situations going on in my book young people can relate to. The book takes place in Los Angeles in a high school. There are some famous spots located in Los Angeles I mentioned in my book.

About The Author: I grew up in Brooklyn, NY but was raised by West Indian parents from Grenada. I graduated from Borough of Manhattan Community College and got my Associates in Arts. I love to create; this is why I started writing. I would dream of characters I made up and put them in different situations. This is why I also want to become a producer, getting involved in productions and creating different storylines. Television and films are really my interests. I am fascinated by every detail in a production because it takes an army to create one. That’s why I also started acting; I get to see behind the scenes, plus I love playing different characters and I am working on getting further in my acting career. When I am not writing I enjoy playing badminton, doing yoga, hiking trails, listening to music and making my friends laugh. I do that by imitating characters and people I’ve watched in movies.
