Interview With Author Deno Chapman

1. What inspired you to write this book?  I raced motorcycles for several years in the UK and wrote a popular online blog. Many readers responded, telling me I should write a book, so the facts inspired the fiction and the book was born.

2. What exactly is it about and who is it written for? The book is about a pair of motor plant mechanics, Paddy Doherty and Nathan O’Neal, who decide to begin motorcycle racing after being fans for years. The book describes how they take to the track, the colorful friends and enemies they make and the adventures that take them through their first season. It is written for anyone who has ever ridden a motorcycle and wondered what it might be like to race in real life, motorsport fans in general and anyone who enjoys earthy banter and a good laugh

3. What do you hope readers will get out of reading your book?    Laughter first and foremost, after that an insight into the amazing world of racing motorcycles

4. How did you decide on your book’s title and cover design?  There’s a great video from the early 1980’s called The Racers, about up and coming racers in the North of Ireland. The title seemed to fit so well, I used it. The cover is actually a watercolor of a photograph of me and my racing team mate, taken in 2004. It was painted by a talented and beautiful Ukrainian lady whom I work with today.

5. What advice or words of wisdom do you have for fellow writers – other than run!?           Be prepared for the publication and marketing to be as much or harder work, than writing the book! Stick to your dream and see it through

6. What trends in the book world do you see -- and where do you think the book publishing industry is heading?  Digital marketing and social media are huge now, I wish I had the knowledge to exploit that better! That said, true, old fashioned book shops are one area of high street sales that I can honestly see continuing to remain strong. There’s no substitute online or otherwise, for wandering through a good book shop.

7. Were there experiences in your personal life or career that came in handy when writing this book? Too many to mention. A lot of the events that string the book together, crashes, a plant fire, parties, race groupies etc. are all real life experiences. Some occurred in my racing career and some in my military career, but much of the book actually happened.

8. How would you describe your writing style? Which writers or books is your writing similar to? My writing style was to type and see where it lead me. I had no plan, no structure and no great organization whatsoever. The book “These Are The Days That Must Happen to You” by Dan Walsh is similar in style despite being a travel blog strewn together, compared to my fiction. Walsh has amazingly dry wit, his is  a brilliant biker read.

9. What challenges did you overcome in the writing of this book? The book spans several years and 2 divorces in my life, so it took a long time to write. Maintaining the determination to complete it was a challenge, fueled by my daughter asking “….but Dad, what about your dream?”

10. If people can buy or read one book this week or month, why should it be yours? I got a wonderful review from an ex Air Force colleague that sums that up; “I read it in 8 hours and couldn’t put it down! I felt like I was actually on the bike and at the parties! I know nothing about motorbike racing, but now I want to do it!” Andrew Edmondson  Director of Vulcan to the Sky.
