Interview With Author G.E. Fisher

1. What inspired you to write this book? I've loved fantasy since I was given my first copy of The Hobbit in 7th grade. I'd never read fantasy before that and I've never looked back. I've been creating stories ever since, and in the last few years decided to finally write them out and get them published.

2. What exactly is it about and who is it written for? My book is a fantasy thriller in a 13th century medieval setting. Humans are not the only race but in the first book and area are the dominate one. The story particularly follows a young mage named Kalamar who leaves the small farming area he grew up in to travel with his master to the local capital. In it, he quickly learns that everyone has agendas and they are not always in everyone's best interest. The story grows as the main character grows. With his increasing power and influence, the world itself expands as new obstacles and challenges arise. It's written for anyone who loves exploring a new world with engaging characters.  It is also important to me that the story shows, not just the characters actions, but the effects of those actions.  This seems left out of many stories and I hope the readers appreciate the broader picture.

3. What do you hope readers will get out of reading your book? I'm truly hoping that people will enjoy reading my book and it will provide them an enjoyable escape from some of the worries and problems that we all have to deal with in the everyday.

4. How did you decide on your book’s title and cover design? The title just seemed appropriate after reading through the book and trying to distill the essence of the main character's struggle. For the artwork, I found a local artist and described one of my favorite scenes in chapter 10. She painted me a canvas and that became the cover art.

5. What advice or words of wisdom do you have for fellow writers – other than run!? Go in with an open mind and not expect an instant jackpot just for putting your name on something.

6. What trends in the book world do you see -- and where do you think the book publishing industry is heading? What I keep hearing is that most people like to read ebooks instead of the real deal. I'm just old school, I guess.

7. Were there experiences in your personal life or career that came in handy when writing this book? Writing this book was totally outside anything I'd done for my career or my life. I'd always actually hated English and Writing classes and now wish I'd paid more attention. Live and learn.

8. How would you describe your writing style? Which writers or books is your writing similar to? I've read thousands of books over my life but don't know how to quantify the styles or how mine would compare. I've tried very hard to make my book believable within the fantasy realm I created. It has always frustrated me when I read a book and the writer paints the main character into a corner, only then to whip out a totally new, unexpected and 'universe breaking' power that saves the day. It cheapens the moment and breaks the trust I gave the writer in the first place.

9. What challenges did you overcome in the writing of this book? Time, was my greatest challenge. I have so many responsibilities both professional and personal that I'd have to force myself to write at the end of the day.  I had to really dedicate myself to the story to get it written the way I wanted and in a format a publisher could work with.

10. If people can buy or read one book this week or month, why should it be yours? They should read mine if they want a fun escape from the modern world. The characters are relatable and most importantly likeable or hate-able. I also hope they'll appreciate that everyone's actions matter, both in my story and their own lives. Everyone creates ripples in the world and they can have surprising impacts on others.
