Anyone looking to use social media effectively or to reboot their efforts will need to answer the following 10 questions:
- What platform (s) should I be on? Why?
- What should I post?
- How often must I post? What days/times work best?
- What are the best ways to share a post?
- How do I get more followers and connections?
- Do I need to engage others with responses to comments and the posts of others?
- How do I convert posts and followers into meaningful connections or book sales?
- When should I update my platform profile page?
- How can I review the metrics of my platform?
- What social media etiquette do’s and don'ts must I be aware of?
To seek out the best answers to these questions, one should read up, consult a pro, and experiment through trial and error.
Authors often tell me that they are on social media but lack followers, don’t use it often, and don’t see sales from it. Well, duh, no surprise there. If you don’t use a resource or tool the way it’s meant to be, how could you expect a pay-off from it?
Social media frustrates and confuses authors. They simply don’t want to spend a lot of time with it, especially if it yields few results. But it’s a Catch-22. It won’t be productive unless you use it and you won’t use it unless it’s productive. First comes the hard work, then the benefits are reaped -- and not the other way around.
Writers can be adverse to book marketing tasks. They don’t feel comfortable promoting themselves. They lack the time to do so. They get frustrated when they try something and it doesn’t work. They feel in the dark about how to do certain things. The list goes on and on. So how do we remove the pain?
You accept it, even embrace it. You plow through it.
You seek out help and help yourself.
If your goal is to be a successful writer, however you choose to define such a standard, it will likely involve you promoting your brand and marketing your book. Social media is the least expensive tool, with the greatest potential pay-off, that authors underutilize.
