Authors Really Sell More Than Words

I was at an art fair recently in Boston, where a building filled with dozens of art studios were turned into galleries that were opened to the public. It gave me a good idea for authors.

As one who loves and supports the arts, I enjoyed strolling into an artist’s world and then walking six feet over to the next one, and the next, and the next. It was like speed dating at a mall for artists.

The exhibit made me wonder if a similar approach would work for writers.

Imagine a building of four floors, each with 12 rooms. You could fill the building with 48 authors simultaneously. Have four, two-hour shifts. By day’s end that is 192 authors peddling their wares. Consumers can come and browse books, interact with authors, or be handed information about all of the displaying authors.

Each shift or floor can highlight a specific genre or theme. Writers can discuss their books, the art of writing, free speech, and the power of the written word.

In one week’s time, nearly 1,400 authors could be showcased. By the way, that is about how many books are published every eight hours in America.

This book bazaar would be awesome. Book-lovers would simply think they had died and went to heaven.

Authors may have a lot of items to sell, including:

*Multiple books in multiple formats
*Related swag — clothing, hats, magnets, gift items, etc.
*Tickets to a bigger event
*Consultation packages for non-fiction service professionals such as financial advisors, nutritionists, therapists, lawyers, etc.

Authors, like the artists that I interacted with, offer a key dimension in the buying process. There is something cool about meeting an artist, author, or musician — especially if you consumed their content. To engage with a creator puts a human face and voice to the art-book-music and pushes us intimately closer to feeling inspired to buy their work.

Authors sell more than words — they sell an idea, a feeling, an experience, a desire, a need — and they sell best when they can hand-sell their books. Readers feel special when they breathe the same air as those who dedicate their lives to creating a better world. Authors most definitely inspire, inform, enlighten, and entertain us.

Go out there and use more than words to sell your words.
