Vintage Car Show Offers Book Marketing Lessons

A few months ago, I attended an outdoor vintage car show with my 16-year-old, car-enthusiast son. It was an amazing display of millions of dollars worth of cars owned by collectors and hobbyists.

We saw scores of colorful cars, ranging from 100 years old to some snazzy cars of this millennium. We loved the show, comparing features from one model and era to another, marveling at the evolution of the auto right before us.

However, the dizzying display of cars left us struggling to zero in on anyone car. They were cannibalizing each other. It was like being in a room full of gorgeous female models. Who stands out when everyone is beautiful?

Well, authors have the same challenge. Their books are stacked on bookstore shelves as well as on Amazon’s online shelves. How does a book get its due?

Authors are the mascots for their books. They give voice to their creation. They must cheerlead and make their presence known. Speak up on social media. Hand out fliers on the street corner. Post on a blog or hold court on their podcast. Submit to book reviewers. Advertise. Apply for book awards. Seek out news media interviews. Do paid reviews. Give out free copies. Beg, trade for, or buy favors. Get creative and do what others fail to do. Just get up and get out there!

Interesting to note, many of the cars on display were ordinary in their day but they survived time. Their rarity becomes appealing, especially in contrast to the uniform boringness of so many of today’s cars. Endurance and persistence count. Just showing up is half the battle.

Rev up your engine, dear author, and hit the road. You may just reach your destiny.
