1. What motivated you to write your book, to force you from taking an idea or experience and turning it into this book? After being diagnosed with a chronic disease, I started studying nutrition to see if I could get my symptoms under control using food as my “medicine.” I was eventually able to come off all the traditional meds and go into complete remission, something very rarely seen in Crohn’s patients. I delved deeper into my nutrition studies and got two certifications to become a nutrition coach. And then I decided that the tremendous, life-changing impact nutrition had on my health needed to be spread to the masses. Because writing has always been my passion, I thought what better way than to offer a book to help people begin creating small, everyday habits that could lead to substantial changes to their eating lifestyles.
2. What is it about and who is it for? The Meal Deal helps readers set up their surroundings to make it easier to begin creating and practicing those habits on a daily basis. My audience started out as women in their 40s and beyond who are ready to take control of their eating lifestyles and get off the diet carousel once and for all. And then I discovered that it could also be a great tool for younger people who are starting out and have little experience with cooking healthy meals.
3. What takeaways might the reader be left with after reading it? That it’s all about experimenting with things and figuring out what works with your lifestyle. It’s about taking small steps to begin changing behaviors. The book helps readers set up their environment to make choosing more nutritious foods easier, as well as learn to focus on progress not perfection.
4. How did you decide on your book’s title and cover design? The Meal Deal came to me rather quickly as I was playing around with words, but the subtitle was my husband’s doing. We were sitting at dinner one night and I told him I wanted a more dynamic subtitle, and he spontaneously came up with Blaze Your Own Trail to a Healthier Eating Lifestyle. I loved the energy behind it. My publisher had a fantastic cover designer and I worked with her to figure out the essence of the book, which is to make meal planning and healthier eating unpretentious and more accessible.
5. What advice or words of wisdom do you have for fellow writers? Practice, practice, practice letting go of worrying about what others think about your writing. It will never please everyone. Write for yourself first, while also keeping your audience in mind. I had so little confidence going into the process of publishing the book, but I loved every minute of writing it. And that ended up being the most meaningful part of it for me.
6. What trends in the book world do you see -- and where do you think the book publishing industry is heading? I think I read that there are a million or more new books published every year. Anyone can publish whatever they want on a number of websites, often for free. This makes it extremely difficult to be found as an author. But it also opens up the publishing world to people who would never have had a chance to put a piece of their heart into the world. I think more people will take advantage of hybrid publishers and self-publishing, and the traditional route to getting your book out there will continue to change dramatically.
7. What challenges did you overcome to write this book? Major self-confidence issues. I was working with a therapist and she asked me how badly I wanted to publish this book on a scale from one to ten. I immediately said 11. She had me send an e-mail to an editor I was thinking about working with while I was in a session with her. And that got the ball rolling.
8. How would you describe your writing style? Relatable (and if you don’t believe me, my mom used the exact same word when I asked her).
9. If people can buy or read one book this week or month, why should it be yours? The Meal Deal is a great way to get you primed for a New Year and a lifetime of healthier eating habits while finally freeing yourself of the diet culture.
