I
often write stories with my students in class. As a teacher, we find ourselves
sharing our creative side and some of share a bit about our own childhood to
establish relationships with our students. My students enjoy my stories and
would say “Ms. Sanchez you should write a book!” It’s was solidified when I would talk with
friends about my childhood or things my daughter went through. People would
always laugh and say the same thing, “you should write a book!” One day I woke up and began writing…
Chievous
is for anyone who feels like there is a battle in them to make a choice. Many
of us struggle with the choice we made and wish we had the chance to do it all
over again and choose differently. This book is about a young girl who makes a
wrong choice and has to face her decision. While waiting for her consequence
from her mother she meets a most unexpected friend who reveals a world of
creatures who have been secretly cheering her on throughout her lifetime. Full of unforgettable characters and
thrilling surprises, readers of all ages will find excitement and adventure as
they follow along with Missy as she experiences the true meaning of being
special.
It
took a while for me to come up with the title of the book. I didn’t have a
title, actually, until I sent the book in for publishing. I had a dream about
the title and wrote it on the manuscript before I knew what I was doing. I’m
really happy with the title though because it fits the character and what I
imagine she would say about her own self. The cover design came about from one
of the moments in the book when Missy in the “In Between” had to have a
conversation with her “Other Self” in the real world. I wanted to capture that
special moment because it demonstrated the need for her to fight for herself.
For
anyone who has a vision or desire in their heart to express themselves through
writing, I would suggest for them to just breathe and start. Most anxieties
come for over thinking. You already know what you want to say, just say it in
your own words as if you are having a conversation with someone. Once you
start, the battle is halfway over.
From
my experience, I think that many readers are opting to read ebooks or audible
books. Everything is becoming more and
more digital and the publishing industry understands.
My
experience as a teacher has allowed me to understand the demands of my young
readers. I know that I order to get them interested in wanting to read the book
I had to make the first page draw them in. Once they want to turn the page and
keep reading, I know they are hooked.
My
characters are unique. When I wrote the book, I just imagined characters that I
would have seen as a child in my head. Spirit moved in a way that did not allow
me to compare the book to any other. However, I have had readers say it
reminded them of the movie Soul..
The
biggest challenge I had was in writing the last chapter. I was such a fan of
the book myself that I didn’t want it to end. Then, after I finished the book
and sent it to the publisher my dog Colby, who Cody Missy’s dog was modeled
after, got sick a passed away. Not having the experience of unboxing the books
with him was extremely hard.
Chievous is an enthralling tale of a young girl who
makes mistakes like anyone and just wants to make the right choices. Readers
will not want to put the book down and may find themselves thinking about their
own challenges in choosing right and forgiving themselves if they don’t. So,
for the reader who faces the battles of choosing right from wrong. Choose
Chievous…then choose you!
