1. What inspired you
to write this book?
I took a course in
writing Children’s Literature when my children were very young and enjoyed
working with my teacher – a former Highlights Magazine Editor. The result of
this union/class was the book!
2. What exactly is it about and who is
it written for?
This is written for
and about my family, my two sons and their now deceased father. Imagination was
always valued in our home and making up stories or events a wonderful part of
our daily lives. Bedtime routine had the boys giving me a few words and I’d
weave a tale with those words that involved them.
3. What do you hope readers will get out of reading your
book?
Playing with your
children in both the imaginative and physical world is important, as is
enforcing the knowledge that being you just as you are is wonderful.
4. How did you decide on your book’s title and cover
design?
I left the cover
design up to my amazing illustrator – Julie Pegan. I loved watching her and her
sister grow up alongside my sons and I knew her creative work would bless this
story and make it come alive, especially for this age group! And the title was
easy as it was about Christopher and the first animal he ‘morphed’ into was a
bunny.
5. What advice or words of wisdom do you have for fellow
writers – other than run!?
I advise getting a
good editor and working with a story you have a passion for. Be open to ideas
and recommendations. And don’t be afraid to put the story out there!
6. What trends in the book world do you see -- and where do you
think the book publishing industry is heading?
I see more electronic
books than before, but depending on the age group, having something little ones
can hold is so important. Many grandparents are reading books to
grandchildren via Facetime and Zoom just to keep in touch and stay connected.
And reading to children in elementary schools and libraries is still a big
thing, along with book fairs. (Note – I’m looking at the younger age groups as
that’s where this book sits.)
7. Were there experiences in your personal life or career
that came in handy when writing this book?
I needed to present
technical information for my day job, so enrolled in Toastmasters to become
more comfortable presenting. I used the Toastmaster concept with my sons where
I did a lot of the creation of the stories when they were little, but they
joined in as they grew. However, with boys at a certain age, the story
digressed to mainly poop and toot with many giggles intertwined. Boys!
8. How would you describe your writing style? Which writers or
books is your writing similar to?
As this is my first
book, I don’t feel I have a ‘style’ as such, nor can I say I’m similar to any
other writers. I’d like to say that my style is imaginative, creative and
filled with love and fun.
8. What challenges did you overcome in the
writing of this book?
Waiting for my
illustrator to grow up was probably the biggest challenge. I started the book
when she was around 6 years old. I loved her drawings and it became clear as
she entered her teens that she was the one for the book. I was also fearful of
submitting the book for publication and being rejected. Not enough confidence
in myself. Add in working full time, raising two boys and taking college
courses that ate up a lot of my time to the equation and I had the perfect
excuse to not publish. However, with the birth of my first grandchild on the horizon,
my illustrator and I worked together to make sure this was available!
9. If people can buy or read one book this week
or month, why should it be yours?
Do you want an excuse
to cuddle a little one? Share a smile? Look at imaginative pictures and learn
your colors? Do you want a way to tell someone they are perfect just as
they are? Then let Christopher Bunny be your book this week!
About The Author Cindy is a first-time author whose family
inspired the writing of Christopher Bunny. Now, with her son’s grown up and a
new grandchild in the picture, she’s finally taken the plunge to publish the
book. She loves hiking in her beloved state of Idaho, wine tasting with
friends, quilting and Legos. It’s the mechanical engineering side of her that
has her addicted to Legos and those amazing three words: “Some assembly
required”.
