How Do Authors Fix Their Social Media?

Successful authors are ones who market as often as they write, and one of the backbones to strong marketing is to have a solid social media platform.

Many authors fail to pursue social media at all, or do so only half-heartedly, and half-assed. Anything done half way is a guarantee of 100% failure.

Here’s what authors can do as it relates to social media:

1.      Recognize you really need to be involved in a sound social media campaign.

2.      Audit your current social media. Can you improve your profile page, post more often, post better content, and seek out new connections? Of course, you can.

3.      First try to do one social media platform really well. Then tackle a second. If you have too many accounts to maintain, it becomes a burden and you’ll likely give up when it gets really busy. Don’t underperform and don’t overburden yourself. Being on two platforms may be the Goldilocks number. Choose from Twitter, Facebook, Linked In, Instagram, YouTube, Pinterest, Tik Tok, and a handful of others.

4.      Support your social media with a website, and either (or all) a blog, podcast, or video channel.

5.      Craft fresh content that will speak to your targeted reader/customer. Seek to produce content that draws people in.

6.      Utilize graphics, images, or videos in you posts.

7.      Determine what your online persona will be - funny, smart, resourceful, critical, inspirational, influential, etc.

8.      Stop thinking that you have nothing of value to say. Don’t fear being judged by others. Just go out there and become the voice or expert that you want people to see. Talk with passion, deliver value, and show emotion.

9.      Deliver messages with enthusiasm, clarity, sincerity, and timeliness. Be compelling. Your message needs to serve the needs and/ or desires of others.

10.  When you make and share videos, pay attention to how things look, from your clothes and background, to your lighting and posture. People will scrutinize your everything - looks, voice, smile, laughter, body language, eye focus, your energy levels, the words you use, and your speaking speed. Do you come across with confidence and conviction? Can you sound like a trusted friend?
