1.. What inspired you to write this book?
I was inspired to write this
book by watching my grandchildren become interested in reading books and I
wanted to see if there was a way to make learning to read something that was
fun.
2. What exactly is it about and who is it written for?
The book is about various
letters of the alphabet who, when they join hands become a new word. It is
written for children who are just learning how to make the connection between
letters of the alphabet and actual words.
3. What do you hope readers will get out of reading
your book?
I hope the adult reading this
book to a child will be able to help the child learn to make the vital first
steps in learning to read.
4. How did you decide on your book’s title and cover design?
I wanted the cover and book
design to portray fun and excitement in learning to read.
5. What advice or words of wisdom do you have for fellow
writers – other than run!?
Be persistent. I published my
first children’s story in a magazine some 20 years ago and wasn’t able to
return to writing until I retired.
6. What trends in the book world do you see -- and where do
you think the book publishing industry is heading?
I think the trend to e-books
will continue as well as more self publishing.
7. Were there experiences in your personal life or career
that came in handy when writing this book?
My experiences as a
psychologist, and having taught child development helped me to focus on
developing new skills in the area of literacy.
8. How would you describe your writing style? Which writers
or books is your writing similar to?
My writing style is a
conversational style – as if I am chatting with the reader.
9. What challenges did you overcome in the writing of this
book?
The challenges were finding the
time to write in the midst of a busy life living with my daughter, her husband
and their three children.
10. If people can buy or read one book this week or month,
why should it be yours?
People should read my book if
they want to engage their children or grandchildren in learning to read.
Dr. Laraine Birnie is a retired clinical psychologist and university professor living with her daughter and three active grandchildren who love to hear her stories. She was inspired to write a book about helping children learn how to read by watching her grandchildren embrace a love of books. Her first children’s story, “The Secret of Samantha’s Broomstick” won an honorable mention in a magazine many years ago. Her website is www.drlarainebirnie.com.
