1. What inspired you to write this book?
I told this story to my daughter when she was young, and she enjoyed it. Thus, when I retired, I decided to make it available to other children.
2. What exactly is it about and who
is it written for?
It is a book for children, kindergarten to 3rd grade. It is about the greatest thing that could happen to a child. A boy meets and plays with an elephant. It's the best thing that could ever have happened to the boy. They become close friends, but to do what is best for the elephant, they ultimately must go their separate ways.
3. What do you hope readers will get out
of reading your book?
They will become part of the dream of having an elephant friend and learn its important to do what is right, even if it hurts for the short term.
4. How did you decide on your book’s title and
cover design?
One night when my daughter was little and going to bed, she asked, "What should she dream about?" I told her the story of the little elephant friend and told her to dream the elephant dream. The cover depicts the dream.
5. What advice or words of wisdom do you have
for fellow writers – other than run!?
Write your story, it's a risk work taking. The most you can do is fail financially but you will win the experience.
6. What trends in the book world do you see --
and where do you think the book publishing industry is heading?
I am not aware of the book world. The Elephant Dream is just a nice story for children in a time that is not very nice to children.
7. Were there experiences in your
personal life or career that came in handy when writing this book?
When I was a child, a carnival came to a shopping plaza near where I lived. It had a small elephant and they sold elephant rides for children. The carnival came to my father's farm to buy hay for the elephant.
8. How would you describe your writing style?
Which writers or books is your writing similar to?
I think and write like a child.
9. What challenges did you overcome in the
writing of this book?
The challenge was to get going.
10. If people can buy or read one book this
week or month, why should it be yours?
The Elephant Dream will make their heart smile and they will spend time with the child or children in their life.
