There are scores, maybe hundreds, of ways to promote and market a book and author brand. Here are eight principles that always work for authors:
1.
Offer A Freemium
Offer something free that lures people into wanting to buy your books. For example, give out content on your site as a free download. You get, in exchange, their email and name, and can solicit them later. They get an item that could convince them they should be buying your books.
2.
Sell As A Loss leader
Sell something below cost. Take a temporary loss. The hope is that the sampling of your writing leads more people to read it, talk about it, and encourage others to buy it- and other books by the writer.
3.
Bundling
This is when you combine a book with other books, services, or products. For instance, if you have a trilogy, sell three books for the price of two. Perhaps you write about a topic like finance and you bundle the books with a free consultation or a discounted service. Consider selling your book with someone else’s book -- at a combined discount (and have the author do the same).
4. Permission Marketing
Ask people to be put on your mailing list.
5. Conduct A Marketing Audit
Evaluate what works -- do more of it, and what
doesn’t - do less of it, and what could be done that has not yet been tried by
you. Analyze where to best put your resources and efforts. It’s never too late
to correct course or launch a good idea.
6. Pay For Coverage
You can buy book reviews. You can go on a paid blogging tour. Some media outlets will allow you to pay for interviews and coverage access.
7. Ask For Help
Yes, ask, and you shall receive. Network, network, network. Exchange favors. Beg for help. Demand more from friends, family, and associates. You are only as good as the team behind you.
8. Sell A Vision/Value, Not A Book
Sure, you are selling a product, a book, but you want to push a vision, a concept, even a value proposition. Make your book about a higher ideal or a fantastic dream. Sell people on emotions and identities. Relate and connect to people first, push a book second.
Keep trying new things and experiment. As long
as you are focused on chronically marketing your book you will find a way to
break through.
