1. What inspired you to write this book?
Lots of things inspired me to write this book, life, health,
age and the Covid pandemic. My biggest inspiration came from my family. The
motivation for me to change my thinking in a positive way. The desire,
passion dream and a sense of achievement to be able to look back and say I
did it, I published my own book.
2. What exactly is it about and who is
it written for?
Travel Through Time With
Baby is a picture word book written for everyone to enjoy the brightly coloured
pictures showing four different times in British history. Directed towards 0-5
age groups or Adults with reading difficulties or language barriers. I myself
was diagnosed with dyslexia at the age of 52. This kind of book would have
given me more confidence, as I would have been able to relate to the picture
first. Written as a tool for Parents, teachers, grandparents and
educators.
3. What do
you hope readers will get out of reading your book?
I hope that younger readers of this book will get an understanding
of connecting pictures to words that have historic knowledge. They can use
images to learn the names of objects and develop literacy skills and language
skills. I also hope the fun eye-catching bright colourful illustrations will
help them to grow confidence, imagination and creativity to want to learn to
read. I hope that adults are able to analyze interaction to help develop
visual intelligence and for parents to spark conversations with the child
filling in the gaps with imagination.
In Education I hope the book can be used for visual literacy,
comprehension and phonics skills. The objects to tell a story and opportunities
for interpretation and discussion. Allowing for increased engagement
and improvement of vocabulary inspiring learning and for pure enjoyment.
4. How did
you decide on your book’s title and cover design?
I wanted my title to have a catchy slogan. The title of my book
was the easy part as it was already traveling through time in history, so all I
had to do is change it to travel through time with baby. The cover design was
to give readers a chance to see the character, with the hope to draw
the reader inside to see the character change travelling through
time in history. The back cover gives the four different times in history.
Looking back I should have shown more of the different characters. We live and
learn.
5. What
advice or words of wisdom do you have for fellow writers – other than run!?
My words of wisdom for fellow readers would be to follow your dreams,
passions and believe in yourself. You only live once, so never give
up until you have tried. You may inspire others to write.
6. What
trends in the book world do you see -- and where do you think the book
publishing industry is heading?
In the book world, I see the trend of more privileged people
getting to write and put their views out in the world. They are the
people who can afford to get their work published in today’s
market. There will be fewer writers from poverty backgrounds being
able to get their work out and views published as it all comes down to
affordability. Coming from a poor background I found that I can not
afford to market my book or promote it. I have found it challenging to make it
in the book world. The industry, I personally feel is heading in a direction,
for people who come from or have money that will have a big impact on the book
industry.
7. Were
there experiences in your personal life or career that came in handy when writing this
book?
There have been a few experiences in my life that did come in
handy when writing my book. I had already designed a children’s book way back
in college. My dreams and passion stayed with me to become an
author and illustrator of children’s books one day. As a cleaner, my
last job was cleaning nursery schools for five days and every day I saw books
that I could be writing and illustrating. I was always good at drawing and
struggled with reading having now found out I am dyslexic. I now
understand why I had the need to do simple history books. Due to experiencing
health issues in my personal life and in my career. As a
result it was the biggest and most important thing that came in handy when
writing my book, allowing me to look after my health and well-being
first.
8. How
would you describe your writing style? Which writers or books is your writing
similar to?
My writing style is
simple, see it, say it with pictures and words of cheerful
characters. My writing style is something that came around, because
I remember my favourite childhood character Mr Benn. Mr Benn was
written by David McKee in 1967. I enjoyed his books and animation of
his character MrBenn with the dream and inspiration that someone may buy my idea
and develop it into an animation.
9. What
challenges did you overcome in the writing of this book?
My biggest challenge was believing in myself and knowing that I
was worthy even though I was not confident that a publisher would take my book
and publishes it. With the support from my family members my
confidence has grown into a positive can-do attitude.
10.
If people can buy or read one book this week or month, why should it be yours?
I believe my
book would bring people the opportunity to read the best little history book on
the market in my opinion. It provides bright colorful pictures and with
cheerful characters to follow. It caters for people of all ages and
reading ability, allowing them to pick my book up and have fun with it.
